Tap RPG games: what they are and which to play
A tap RPG is a role-playing game where your finger is the sword: you tap monsters to hit them, collect what they drop and come back stronger. We make one, so we have opinions, but this page also covers the games we did not make.
What is a tap RPG?
A tap RPG takes the bones of a role-playing game (a hero, enemies, loot, levels and bosses) and puts combat on the simplest input a phone has: the tap. Each tap is an attack. Defeated monsters pay out currency and experience, which buy upgrades, which make the next tap hit harder. The loop is short enough to play in a queue and deep enough to plan a build around.
The genre grew out of browser clicker games. Clicker Heroes made "click the monster, buy an upgrade" famous on PC, and phones turned the click into a tap. On mobile you will see the same kind of game called a tap RPG, a clicker RPG, a tap hero game or an incremental RPG.
Tap RPG, clicker RPG, idle RPG: what is the difference?
- Clicker RPG is the original form, from the browser and the desktop: you click to attack and spend the rewards on upgrades.
- Tap RPG is the same idea built for a touch screen, usually in portrait mode and played with one thumb.
- Idle RPG means progress keeps running while the app is closed. Most of the famous tap RPGs, Tap Titans 2 included, are idle at heart: tapping speeds things up, but helpers and timers do much of the work.
- Incremental game is the family name the community uses for anything built around numbers that keep growing. An active incremental game grows while you play, not while you wait.
So the useful question is not which label a game wears, but whether it is active or idle. In an active tap RPG monsters hit back, a round can be lost and nothing happens while you are away. In an idle one the numbers keep climbing overnight. Neither is better; they scratch different itches.
What makes a tap RPG worth your time
Loot you can actually wear
Upgrade buttons get old. Weapons, armour and hats with their own stats give every drop a decision: equip it, socket it, or sell it.
Bosses that test your build
A good boss is a wall you climb with better gear and a smarter build, not a timer you wait out.
Classes or builds that play differently
If every player ends up with the same setup, there is nothing left to discover. Classes, skill trees and gear bonuses give two players of the same level two different games.
Something to do with your build
PvP, ladders and events give you a reason to keep improving after the campaign.
Fair monetisation
Nearly every tap RPG is free with in-app purchases. The good ones sell speed and convenience, not the only road to the end.
Tap RPGs worth playing in 2026
Turbo Tap Masters (iPhone, iPad, Android)
Ours, so weigh this paragraph accordingly. An active tap RPG: monsters fight back, loot is real gear with gems and refinement, five classes have their own skill trees, and ranked PvP duels put your build against other players. Not for you if you want progress while the phone is in your pocket.
Tap Titans 2 (iPhone, iPad, Android)
The best-known tap RPG on mobile. You play the Sword Master, hire heroes who fight alongside you and push through stage after stage, with clans, clan raids and tournaments for the social side. Idle at heart, with years of content behind it. Here is how it compares with Turbo Tap Masters.
Clicker Heroes (iPhone, Android, PC)
The classic that defined the genre. Click monsters, hire heroes, beat the boss every fifth zone, reset for permanent bonuses and climb again. Idle, deep, and the reference point for everything after it. See games like Clicker Heroes.
Almost a Hero (iPhone, Android)
A team of comically underqualified heroes, a clicker RPG loop close to Tap Titans 2, and a sense of humour about the whole thing. Idle progress included.
Idle Slayer (iPhone, Android, PC)
Not strictly an RPG: a side-scrolling runner crossed with a clicker. You jump and slash in short active bursts while upgrades keep the numbers growing in the background.

How Turbo Tap Masters plays
Each round you tap the monsters on screen before they wear down your shields. Your HP grows with your player level, your damage comes from what you wear. The campaign runs biome after biome, each with its own monsters and a boss guarding the exit. Drops are weapons, armour and hats with full stat sheets; gems go into their sockets and the forge refines them further.
After level 10 you pick one of five classes, and once your build is ready, ranked duels put it against other players. The Boss Run sends you through every boss you have reached, back to back, once a day. The beginner guide covers the first hour.
Frequently asked
What is a tap RPG?
A role-playing game where combat is tapping: each tap is an attack, defeated monsters drop currency, experience and loot, and upgrades make the next round faster. It is the mobile version of the clicker RPG.
Is a tap RPG the same as an idle game?
Not always. Many tap RPGs are idle, meaning progress continues while the app is closed. Active tap RPGs such as Turbo Tap Masters only move forward while you play, and monsters can defeat you.
What is the best free tap RPG?
It depends on what you want. Tap Titans 2 for a deep idle game with clans, Clicker Heroes for the classic, Turbo Tap Masters for gear, classes and PvP duels in an active game. All three are free to download.
Can you play a tap RPG with one hand?
Usually, yes: that is the point of the genre. Turbo Tap Masters runs in portrait mode and every screen is built for one thumb.
